Brass Ring Cycle

“Intermittent stress builds – Constant stress breaks down.”
-Basic tenet of athletic training

In elite athletic organizations, a team will begin training well before the season is set to begin.  Training begins, not by playing other teams, but by building up the athletes’ strength, stamina, power, and speed as well as focusing on the fundamentals of technique.  This principle echoes in the training regimen of elite swimmers, runners, triathletes, soccer teams, football teams, etc.

In elite military organizations this same principle is at work.  In pre-deployment stages, a unit will undergo cyclical training before going out the door as the “on-call unit”.

True athletic development is based
on a cycle of training that is repeated often.

The Brass Ring Cycle builds upon the principles found in nearly every elite athletic training program and merges them with the principles used in developing mindset of the warrior athlete.

A Full Year

The Brass Ring Cycle is designed to take a full year to complete.  Each year is broken into 3 Long Cycles and 3 Short Cycles, each designed to flow seamlessly into the following phase.

The Long Cycles consist of 3 – twelve week phases.  Each 12 week cycle will delve deeply into the fundamentals of building prowess in the subject.

  • Phase 1 – 12 weeks of Strength and Stamina.
  • Phase 2 – 12 weeks of Power and Speed
  • Phase 3 – 12 weeks of Extreme Training

The Short Cycle consists of 3 – four week phases.  Each 4 week cycle will reinvigorate your understanding of the subject, often showing marked increases in your abilities.

  • Phase 1 – 4 weeks of Strength and Stamina.
  • Phase 2 – 4 weeks of Power and Speed
  • Phase 3 – 4 weeks of Extreme Training

Breakdown

  • The Strength and Stamina Training cycle assumes you have a solid foundation of technical proficiency in basic functional movement and athletic training. Upon this foundation, the first level of true fitness is built. This starts with strengthening your body through resistance training and stamina challenges.  You will improve your body’s capability to perform functional movement with resistance for greater lengths of time.
  • Power and Speed Training adds explosive training and high intensity interval training to further develop your body’s athletic capability to move farther faster. This phase adds higher levels of plyometrics and Olympic Weightlifting, as well as other explosive movements to prepare your body for the final phase in the cycle.
  • Extreme Training tests your body and mind through difficult workouts that incorporate multiple modes of energy requirements. These are wickedly challenging workouts designed only for the prepared.

Why it works

The CrossFit method is one of the best forms of training for the human body.  “Constantly varied functional movements at high intensity” is the tagline of CrossFit, and millions of people around the globe have found the power in this simple statement.

The Brass Ring Cycle training combines the CrossFit method, a structure based on elite athletic training principles, and a focus on the mental training for the Warrior Athlete.  We give you the what, the how, and the why.  You just supply the when.

How It Works

The cyclical nature of the program is designed to build upon itself.  Every time you reenter a phase, you will have a very strong sense of how far you have come, how much you have progressed.  For example:  when you try the program for a year, you will encounter each phase twice.  During the short phase of “Strength & Stamina”, the second time you’ve tackled this goal, you will feel stronger, you will be able to endure longer.

This program grows as you do.  As you are able to do more pull-ups, more will be assigned.  When you finally are able to deadlift 200lbs, you’ll be congratulated with a request to lift 210 lbs.  It will push you farther and take you further than you ever thought you could go.

Tutorials

On this website, we have excellent tutorials for mastering basic body movements. Please study all of these videos and written explanations, ESPECIALLY if you think you already know how to perform the exercises correctly. As new movements are introduced, Premium package coaches will do their best to effectively teach you how to perform each movement; however, a phone conversation is no substitute for studying the tutorials!

Equipment

The equipment you used in the Basic Training Program will continue to be a major part of your workouts in the Brass Ring Cycle phases. It is helpful to add some additional equipment, including:

Basic Training Equipment:

  • 2 sets of dumbbells (one set should be light and the other heavy)
  • 2 kettlebells (one kettlebell should be light, the other heavy)
  • 1 wooden or PVC dowel
  • 1 Pull up bar (door gym)

Additional equipment recommended:

  • Kettlebells – 1 light / 1 med / 1 heavy (ex: 18lbs / 35lbs / 54lbs)
  • Dumbbells – 2 med / 2 heavy (ex: 30lbs / 40lbs)
  • Olympic bar (as recommended by your coach)
  • Olympic weight set (as recommended by your coach)
  • 5 foot PVC or dowel stick
  • Jump Rope
  • 20-24″ box
  • Weight Vest or back pack for training
  • 10-20lbs medicine ball

For Premium Package Clients: During your first coaching session you and your coach will discuss the specific equipment that you’ll need, including where to find them and the exact weights of the kettlebells, dumbbells, and medicine balls.

For Standard Package Clients: Use your imagination!  If you have access to a gym, use the equipment available.  If you have no access to a gym and very little spare cash, use a cinder block for a kettlebell and a broom handle for the dowel.  (Not ideal, but get creative!)
